Dr.
William Steen began his practice in 1970 as an eye surgeon specializing
in cataract surgery. Over the past 30 plus years he has performed over 45,000 eye surgeries, including more than 35,000 cataract surgeries and in excess of 14,000 operations using only topical anesthesia, making him one of the most experienced surgeons in Louisiana.
In 1984 he began performing RK and AK, making him one of the pioneers in the area of refractive surgery in Louisiana. Since that time he has been dedicated to bringing the latest in refractive surgery techniques to this area. |

Dr. Steen's lists of refractive "firsts" in the Ark-La-Tex include:
- first to use corneal topography to enhance surgical results
- first to perform ALK
- first to perform PRK
- first to perform LASIK
In 1992, Dr. Steen participated in the Summit Excimer Laser Technology
Visionary program in which he gained worldwide experience in the
use of this exciting new laser performing procedures in London
and Berlin. Upon the laser's approval by the FDA, he performed
the first Excimer laser surgery in January 1996. He performed
the first LASIK procedure in April 1996, in the Ark-La-Tex, for
the treatment of nearsightedness.
Dr. Steen is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and the American College of Eye Surgeons. He was the first Ark-La-Tex eye surgeon to be certified by the American Board of Eye Surgery in both Cataract/Implant Surgery and Incisional Keratotomy (Refractive) Surgery. He is a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons as well as the American Academy of Ophthalmology. |

Dr. Stephen Lewis joined Dr. Steen's practice in 1987 following graduation from Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee. Since that time, Dr. Lewis has worked closely with Dr. Steen in the pre and post-operative care of all refractive surgeries.Dr.Lewis is a member of the American Optometric Association and is therapeutically licensed to diagnose and treat ocular disease by the Louisiana State Board of Optometry. In 1997 Dr. Lewis was appointed to serve a five year term on the State Board of Optometry which governs the practice of optometry in Louisiana. |

Leigh Whatley began her career at the Steen - Hall Eye Institute in 1982 following completing of service in the U.S. Army. She has worked exclusively for Dr. Steen, in the refractive surgery program since 1984. Leigh has surgically assisted in every type of refractive procedure performed by Dr. Steen over the past 20 years, including RK, ALK, PRK, LASIK and CK.
She is also the chief clinician at Steen Custom Vision.Leigh's training and certification include: - U.S. Army Eye Specialist Program - 1978

Kim
Owen is an Certified Ophthalmic Assistant who has worked with
Dr. Steen for over seven years. Kim has several years experience
counseling patients regarding refractive surgery and providing pre
and post-operative care.
